Creating a more accessible Balboa Park for all.
Forever Balboa Park’s signage and wayfinding project intends to enhance the visitor experience through new, accurate signage across the 1,200 acres of Balboa Park.
Phase 1 includes the installation of 33+ new signs throughout the park’s three mesas. The signs will identify park attractions, historical sites, tram stops, traffic and parking information, and more.
Clear and uniform signage will make navigating the park easier for all visitors. This project also includes Spanish translations for the park’s Spanish-speaking visitors.
Phase 2 of the project includes the design and implementation of a parkwide map to be used in print and digital formats.
The project is currently ongoing and follows the Central Mesa Precise Plan of the Balboa Park Master Plan.

The signage and wayfinding project is led by Jacqueline Higgins, Forever Balboa Park’s Director of Planning, Design and Programs, and supported by Audrey Tamayo, Park Improvement Senior Specialist.

Forever Balboa Park secured a grant from the Legler Benbough Foundation to undertake a signage plan update for Balboa Park.

Forever Balboa Park formed a Signage & Wayfinding Steering Committee composed of key park stakeholders and subject matter specialists.

The draft plan was presented at the March meeting of the Balboa Park Committee, the mayor’s advisory committee for the park.

Forever Balboa Park conducted multiple outreach meetings in June to solicit public feedback on the evolution of various elements of the draft plan.

The public was invited to review two sign mockups and vote on their preferred palette scheme for the new Balboa Park signage. The bronze palette was selected by a wide margin.

The Balboa Park Committee approved the current plan developed and presented by RSM Design in October.
